Stock market benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty slipped lower for the third consecutive day on Wednesday (January 7, 2026) as geopolitical tensions and fresh concerns about possible US tariff hikes weighed on investor sentiments.
The market also declined due to continued withdrawal of foreign funds.
The 30-share BSE Sensex closed at 84,961.14, down 102.20 points or 0.12%. It fell 445.85 points or 0.52% to 84,617.49 during the day.

However, Titan, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services were among the gainers.
“Indian equity markets ended today’s session on a soft and cautious note with investors taking a selective stance amid mixed domestic and global cues. Rising geopolitical tensions and renewed tariff-related concerns continued to limit risk appetite and curb aggressive positioning,” said Ponmudi R, CEO of online trading and wealth tech firm Enrich Money.
According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors sold equities worth ₹107.63 crore on Tuesday (January 6). However, domestic institutional investors bought stocks worth ₹1,749.35 crore.
“Domestic market sentiment remains cautious due to risk-off environment ahead of Q3FY26 earnings and key US jobs data. While QoQ corporate earnings are expected to improve, FIIs will remain risk-averse amid global trade uncertainty,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Ltd.
In Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi index and Shanghai’s SSE Composite index closed higher, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 index and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index closed lower.
European markets were mostly trading on the decline.
