Nifty hits record intraday high; Sensex jumps 573 points on gains in power, banking stocks

Equity benchmark index Nifty hit its lifetime peak before closing 182 points higher on Friday (January 2, 2026) and BSE Sensex jumped 573 points led by strong buying in power, banking and metal stocks.

Traders said unabated capital inflows by domestic institutional investors amid a sharp rise in Asian peers also supported the domestic stock market.

Showing a strong trend, the 30-share BSE Sensex closed at 85,762.01, up 573.41 points or 0.67%. During the day it jumped 623.67 points or 0.73% to 85,812.27.

The 50-share NSE Nifty rose 182 points or 0.70% to 26,328.55. During the day, it rose 193.45 points or 0.73% to an all-time high of 26,340.

Among the 30-Sensex companies, NTPC, Trent, Bajaj Finance, Power Grid, Maruti, State Bank of India, ICICI Bank and Bharat Electronics were the top gainers.

In contrast, ITC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Titan Company, Axis Bank and Bharti Airtel were among the laggards.

According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth ₹3,268.60 crore on Thursday (January 1, 2026), while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought stocks worth ₹1,525.89 crore.

In Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi index and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index closed significantly higher. China’s Shanghai Index and Japan’s Nikkei remained closed due to holidays.

European markets were trading higher.

US markets were closed on Thursday (January 1) due to the New Year holiday.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude fell 0.36% to $60.63 a barrel.

On Thursday (January 1), the Sensex closed 32 points or 0.04% lower at 85,188.60. Nifty closed at 26,146.55 with a marginal gain of 16.95 points or 0.06%.
