Samvat 2082: Sensex, Nifty end with modest gains in special Muhurat trading session

Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty closed with marginal gains in a one-hour special muhurat trading session on Tuesday (October 21, 2025), marking a positive start to the new Samvat year 2082 amid strong global cues.

The 30-share BSE Sensex closed 62.97 points or 0.07% higher at 84,426.34. During the symbolic session, the benchmark touched a high of 84,665.44 and a low of 84,286.40.

The broader NSE Nifty closed 25.45 points or 0.10% higher at 25,868.60. 25 Nifty stocks closed with a decline, while 24 stocks closed with gains and one remained unchanged.

Stock exchanges BSE and NSE held a special Muhurat trading session from 1345 hrs to 1445 hrs on Tuesday (October 21, 2025) on the occasion of the beginning of new Samvat year 2082 and opening of new account books for traders and investors.

In the last Samvat 2081 ended Monday (October 20, 2025), BSE Sensex jumped 4,974.31 points or 6.26% and Nifty gained 1,637.8 points or 6.76%.

Muhurta trading is a symbolic one-hour trading session organized by stock exchanges on the occasion of Diwali, marking the beginning of the new Samvat year and new books of accounts by traders.

Among major Sensex stocks, Bajaj Finserv gained the most by 1.42%, Axis Bank by 0.80%, Infosys by 0.72%, Mahindra & Mahindra by 0.60%, Tata Motors by 0.55%, Bajaj Finance by 0.53% and Tata Steel by 0.52%.

Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, HCL Technologies, Bharti Airtel, Maruti Suzuki India, Trent Ltd and Tata Consultancy Services were among the losers.

Broader markets also advanced and BSE Midcap closed 0.23% or 106.95 points higher at 46,787.20. BSE Smallcap closed 0.91% or 486.81 points higher at 53,842.85.

Among sectoral indices, Industrials rose by 0.53%, Telecom by 0.51%, Commodity by 0.47%, Capital goods by 0.40%, Services by 0.38% and Metal by 0.37%.

On the other hand, Bankex and Realty closed marginally lower.

Meanwhile, global markets were trading firmly. European shares rose in early trade while Asian shares closed with gains.

Shanghai’s composite benchmark rose 1.36%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index rose 0.77%, South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.24% and Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 0.15%.

According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought equities worth ₹790.45 crore on Monday (October 20, 2025), while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) outpaced FIIs by acquiring shares worth ₹2,485.46 crore.

On Monday (October 20, 2025), the 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 411.18 points to close at 84,363.37, while the 50-share NSE Nifty closed 133.30 points higher at 25,843.15.
