India, EU to begin next round of talks for trade pact from Oct. 6 in Brussels

An official said that a senior Indian official and 27-Nation European Union (EU) would begin the next round of negotiations to exclude differences on issues on issues for the initial conclusion of a proposed free trade agreement at Brussels on Monday (October 6, 2025).

This will be the 14th round of interaction between the two sides. The official said the five -day talks would begin on 6 October.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently hoped that the two sides will soon sign the agreement.

The purpose of the treaty is to promote two-way commerce and investment.

Mr. Goyal is likely to review the progress of negotiations at the end of this month from the European Union Trade Commissioner Maros Sephakovic in South Africa, as December is December.

SEFCOVIC and European Commission Agriculture Commissioner Christof Hansen was here to review the progress of talks with Goyal last month.

Both sides have targeted to conclude the conversation by December.

In June 2022, India and the European Union blocks launched a comprehensive FTA, an investment protection agreement and an agreement on geographical signals after a gap of over eight years. It was stopped in 2013 due to differences at the level of opening markets.

In addition to the demand for significant duties cut in automobile and medical devices, the European Union wants a decrease in taxes in other products such as liquor, spirits, meat, poultry and a strong intellectual property regime.

Export of Indian goods to the European Union, such as prepared textiles, pharmaceuticals, steel, petroleum products and electrical machinery, may be more competitive through the treaty.

The India-EU trade treaty talks include 23 policy sectors or chapters in goods, including trade, investment, sanitary and phytosaitary measures, technical barriers for business, business remedies, original rules, customs and business facilities, competition, business defense, government procurement, dispute, intellectual rights, geographical signs, and sustainable development.

India’s bilateral trade in goods with the European Union was $ 136.53 billion in 2024–25 (export of $ 75.85 billion and import of $ 60.68 billion), it makes the largest trading partner for goods.

The European Union market is about 17 percent of India’s total exports, and the export of blocks to India is 9 percent of its total foreign shipment.

In addition, bilateral trade in services between India and the European Union was estimated at $ 51.45 billion in 2023.
