An official said a four-fided memorandum (MoU) was signed in Kohima on Friday (September 26, 2025) to promote jute and new age natural fiber cultivation in Nagaland.
The MoU was signed by the National Jute Board (NJB), Jute Corporation of India Limited (JCI), ICAR-Sentral Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fiber (ICAR-Cridges) and Agriculture Department of Government of Nagaland.
MoU Signing was chaired by Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC) Nagaland, Vezop Kane, director Sanujo Nienu, Joint Secretary Central Textile Padmini Singha, NJB Head (Technical) Mahadeb Dutt, JCI Director (Finance) Kaushik Rakshit and others.
The MoU is valid for five years from 2025–26 to 2030-31, aimed at expanding jute farming in Nagaland, improving agricultural practices, and introducing fibers such as pilot scale sun, rami and sisal.
This agreement wants to provide farmers opportunities for alternative cash crops, high income and sustainable livelihood.
Exposing the importance of the initiative, officials said that being jute, biodegradable, renewable and environmentally friendly, have immense ability as an alternative to plastic and wood.
India, the world’s largest producer of jute and jute goods, continues to rely on the government-supported supply, leaving diversification.
The MoU is expected to open new industrial applications and support the price -added fiber production in the state.
