GST evasion of ₹7.08 lakh crore detected in five years, includes input tax credit fraud of ₹1.79 lakh crore

“Central Goods and Services Tax (GST) Field officials have detected a tax evasion of about $ 7.08 million crore till the fiscal of 2024-25 in the last five years, including the input tax credit (ITC) fraud of about ₹ 1.79 lakh crore,” Parliament was informed on Monday (August 4, 2025).

According to the data shared by Finance Minister Pankaj Chaudhary in the Lok Sabha, more than 2.23 lakh crore GST theft was detected by CGST Field Officers of 2024-25 alone.

Out of 30,056 cases of GST theft in FY’25, ITC was related to fraud in more than half or 15,283 cases, where the theft was to a tune of ₹ 58,772 crore. In the fiscal of 2023-24, the address of the theft of 2.30 lakh crore GST was found by the CGST Field Officers, including ITC fraud of IT 36,374 crore.

In FY’23, about ₹ 1.32 lakh crore GST theft was detected, which included 24,140 crore fake ITC claims. In FY’22 and FY’21, GST theft was .2 73,238 crore and ₹ 49,384 crore respectively. This included ITC fraud worth ₹ 28,022 crore and .2 31,233 crore respectively.

In the last five years (2020–21 to 2024-25), the total GST theft found by CGST Field Officers was about ₹ 7.08 lakh crore in 91,370 cases. Taxes recovered during the period through voluntary deposits. There were more than 1.29 lakh crores.

The stolen figures include ITC fraud of about ₹ 1.79 lakh crore in 44,938 cases between FY’21 and FY’25. Mr. Chaudhary said that the Central Government and GSTN are taking various steps to prevent tax evasion, such as e-invoicing, digitization through GST Analytics, highlighting outlers on the basis of system-flagged mismatch, selection and selection of taxpayers for audit based on various risk parameters and selecting returns and selecting returns.

In a written reply in the lower house, Mr. Chaudhary said, “These measures are helpful in revenue protection and naughty.”

For a question on the actual net central GST collection compared to the revised estimates (RE), Mr. Chaudhary said that the NET CGST collection was 96.7% of RE in the financial year of 2024-25. Net CGST includes CGST+Integrated GST+Compensation Cess.

The actual collection was more than ₹ 10.26 lakh crore in FY’25, as was about ₹ 10.62 lakh crore. In FY’24, NET CGST collection, 9.57 lakh crore or more than 100.1a% was more than ₹ 9.56 lakh crore.
