Britannia Industries gets over ₹25 cr demand from tax authority


Britannia Industries Limited said on Thursday that it received an order from the GST Authority, which has a demand of more than 25 crores related to the classification of products sold by IT in relation to some goods and input tax credit.

In a regulatory filing, the company said that the Additional Commissioner of CGST & CX, Kolkata North has passed an order covering the tax period from July 2017 to March 2023.

Britannia Industries Limited said, “The order has demanded a tax of 25,41,73,150, with equal fines and applicable interest.”

The order has been passed on August 3, 2024 for a reasons notice issued by the Directorate General of the Directorate General of GST Intelligence, which is related to the input tax credit regarding the classification of a certain product sold by the company and some goods.

Saying that this order is an appeal on legal properties, the company said that it will “take necessary action, including using the legal measures available under the GST law”.
