Markets decline in early trade, tracking weak Asian peers on Trump’s tariffs announcement

Equity benchmark Indices Sensx and Nifty declined early trade on Thursday (April 3, 2025), dragged by IT shares, weaker trends from Asian markets after announcing mutual tariffs in about 60 countries.

The US has announced 27% mutual tariffs on India, saying that New Delhi implements high imports on US goods, as the Donald Trump administration aims to reduce the country’s trade deficit and promote manufacturing.

The move is expected to influence India’s exports to the US, however, experts say India is better than its rivals, which also face levy.

The 30-Sare BSE Sensex declined by 378.60 points or 0.49% to 76,238.84 in the morning trade. In the session, it occurred depreciation to the Intrade lower hits of 809.89 points or 1.05% to 75,807.55.

The broad NSE Nifty slipped to 80.60 points or 0.35% by 23,251.75.

From Sensx Pack, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Tata Motors, Adani Ports, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Industries and Maruti Suzuki, Zomato and Kotak Mahindra were the major leaders.

Sun Pharmaceuticals, NTPC, Titan, Powergrid, Bajaj Finance, UltraTech Cement, Asian Paints, IndusInd Bank and Larsen & Toubro were among the beneficiaries. BSE Midcap Gauge depreciated 0.41%, and Smallcap Index took 0.08%dip.

In Asian markets, Nikkei of Tokyo increased by more than 3%, followed by Hong Kong (2%), Seoul’s Kospi (1%) and Shanghai (0.39%).

According to the head of HDFC Securities’ Chief Prime Research Devash Vakil, the global stock markets declined after US President Donald Trump announced a joyful-to-approved tariff.

On Wednesday (April 2, 2025), Mr. Trump determined the US “mutual tariff” rates that more than 180 countries and regions, including members of the European Union, would face their new trade policy.

The American markets ended more in overnight deals on Wednesday.

Global Oil Benchmark Brent crude diverted 2.31% to $ 73.22 per barrel.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FII) on Wednesday launched an equity worth ₹ 1,538.88 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DII) overtook FII by purchasing Equity worth ₹ 2,808.83 crore to FIS.

On Wednesday, 30-chair BSE Sensx retaliated to settle the 592.93 points at 76,617.44, and NSE Nifty climbed to 166.65 points to settle at 23,332.35.
