Ensure no claim denied or delayed, IRDAI to insurers on Air India crash

Insurance regulator Idardi has advised the insured in view of the Air India plane accident that those who died either are either denying or delayed due to procedural formalities.

India’s Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority said in a circular to all insurers, re -insurance councils and general insurance council, “No claim is made or delayed … In the case of passenger list and deceased persons in the affected buildings of the accident area,”

It asked the councils to set up a dedicated joint cell in the hospital, where Boeing was injured after 787–8 Dreamliner, crashed at the BJ Medical College Hostel and other buildings were being treated. This will help provide information to the insurers immediately regarding the claims required for any of their health/life insurance policies or any other assistance.

London Bound Air India Flight 171 crashed after flying from Ahmedabad on Thursday, resulting in 242 out of 242 people, including 12 crew members. There were casualties in the neighborhood after the accident.

Describing it as a moment that calls for compassion, accountability and extreme efficiency in supporting the affected families, Idardi wanted all insurers to act immediately as the passenger list has already been released. Since medical insurance cover is mandatory for foreign travel, it was wanted to get a certified list of passengers and also the insurance policy details of the affected people in the vicinity of the accident area.

The regulator stated that Foreign Medical Insurance Policy, personal accident policies and life insurance policies verify the details in the corresponding data base of the insurers and start fast-track procedures for claim settlement.

It wanted to waive the requirements such as the First Information Report (FIR) or post mortem report to the insurer, where official confirmation is available from the authorities concerned. It also wanted the nominee to register the claim to the disposal of the claim.

Idardi advised the insurers to nominate a nodal officer at a senior level to coordinate with the joint cell for early disposal of claims. From June 16, insurers should submit a report on a weekly basis for a month. The councils should publish the disposal data of insurer-wise summary level claims, it said.
